This is the best garlic mashed potatoes recipe you’ll ever have! Creamy mashed potatoes flavored with parmesan, milk, and garlic.
Mashed Potatoes Ingredients
I love a good old-fashioned mashed potato recipe! There’s something about a bowl of warm and fluffy perfectly seasoned potatoes that sits right with my soul! A nice bowl of creamy potatoes can just have simple mashed potato ingredients such as butter, salt, and pepper.
However, the best mashed potato ingredients can range from bacon and sour cream to garlic and red pepper flakes. This recipe has a few of my favorite things, let’s get into it!
- Potatoes- Of course, this is the main ingredient but there are so many options. Russet potatoes and Yukon Gold have a higher starch content and can be whipped up into a fluffy and light mash.
- Butter- I use salted butter because it’s the perfect way to loosen up the mashed potatoes. Use the best butter possible.
- Heavy Cream- Sometimes I use whole milk but, for this mashed potatoes recipe I decided to use heavy cream for a more decadent and fluffy texture
- Parmesan– We’ve all heard of cheesy potatoes but I prefer parmesan in mashed potatoes because of the flavor.
- Kosher Salt- This is my go-to salt choice. Skip iodized salt and the metallic flavor it is.
- Red Pepper Flakes- I like to add a little spice and color. Red pepper flakes are the perfect way to do this.
- Garlic Powder- Garlic makes everything better and these potatoes are no different!
Tips for the Best Mashed Potatoes
People usually think that all potatoes are the same but they are not. I usually use russet potatoes because they contain lots of starch.
Secondly, do not cut your potatoes into tiny chunks. Large even chunks are best. I know the goal is usually to get the potatoes boiled as quickly as possible but the smaller the chunks, the more water they will retain. It’s virtually impossible to make fluffy mashed potatoes because too much starch will be released and they will develop a gluey texture. Try cutting your potatoes into 4-6 chunks for this easy garlic parmesan mashed potatoes recipe.
Add room temperature ingredients to the mashed potatoes. If you’re rushing, it’s hard to take the butter and milk out a little early, but the closer in temperature the ingredients and potatoes are, the easier and more evenly everything will combine.
How to Make Mashed Potatoes Step-by-Step
Mashed potatoes are a simple side dish but with just a few tips and tricks they can become the star of a meal.
- I always start by cleaning the outsides of the potatoes by rinsing them and wiping them down with paper towels.
- After peeling each potato I give it a rinse in cold water to remove any dirt.
- Chop the potatoes and pop them into a pot of cold water. Add a couple of heavy pinches of kosher salt then bring it to a boil.
